The Old Conduit, a component of the Washington Aqueduct, is a 9-mile-long historic pipeline constructed out of brick, natural stone, concrete & mortar completed in the mid-1860s, and the conduit transports raw water from the Potomac River to the Dalecarlia Reservoir.

The Washington Aqueduct is owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and supplies public drinking water to the Nation’s Capital and surrounding areas.

Following a visual inspection, it was determined that repairs and maintenance work were required to improve the structural integrity and extend the Old Conduit’s service life.

The project’s engineer of record is a joint design team, between Nova Consulting and Hazen & Sawyer, and the prime contract was awarded to STRUCTURAL for the installation of 305 LF V-Wrap(TM) CFRP Lining System and 12,055 LF of shotcrete liner in segments throughout the entire length of the pipe. STRUCTURAL subcontracted the liner design to Simpson, Gumpterz & Heger.  Ancillary scope items included construction of staging areas at 22 access points along the conduit, installation of new station markers at 200’ intervals inside the conduit, installation of a new guard rail to protect a historic brick vent structure, and cleaning & rehabilitation of the 18 existing sluice gates within the cross-connect structures.
