The Case for Cathodic Protection of Concrete in Aggressive Environments

Reinforced concrete structures are designed and built to function for a certain period with as little maintenance as possible. As structures age, it is in the owner’s best interest to choose a repair approach that is focused on the long-term protection of the structure to extend its service-life and save on maintenance costs. Cathodic protection is a crucial component of a long-term repair plan, especially for structures that operate in an aggressive environment. An impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system is capable of providing a significant service-life extension for reinforced concrete structures that suffer from corrosion. Installed as part of a repair solution or during the construction phase on a new structure, ICCP systems require little to no maintenance. A life-cycle cost of an ICCP system, compared to traditional repairs, further illustrates the value of high one-time cost for long-term corrosion protection.
