The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) encountered a significant challenge with its underground parking structure. The garage, consisting of two levels and featuring only one two-way access, displayed visible signs of corrosion, necessitating a phased repair approach to remain operational. Water, chlorides, and previous repairs that lacked sustainability caused the corrosion of reinforcements to accelerate. MassDOT engaged STRUCTURAL, an exclusive licensee of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES, to undertake the restoration project.
STRUCTURAL developed a comprehensive three-phase project schedule to address these concerns, including concrete repairs, waterproofing, and the installation of STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES’ ElectrotechCP™ Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system across more than 52,000 square feet of the garage. This advanced corrosion protection solution with remote monitoring system ensures proactive corrosion prevention and extends the service life of the structure by over 30 years.
The project was completed in an active garage, which was especially challenging as it serves as the only garage for the MassDOT employees. The collaborative effort resulted in significant improvements to the parking structure’s integrity and functionality, ensuring enhanced durability and reduced maintenance needs for the continued operation of this vital infrastructure asset.
